Book of Dead at Betsson
Book of Dead is the slot most regular Swedish players know by name. Made by the Swedish studio Play'n GO and released in 2016, it sends the explorer Rich Wilde into an Egyptian tomb, and its free spins feature has been copied by dozens of other 'Book' slots. This page explains how the game works at Betsson: reels and paylines, the free spins round with its expanding symbol, RTP versions and volatility, and how to play it within limits.

Book of Dead at a glance
The key facts about Book of Dead before you play a single spin.
- Studio Play'n GO, Sweden
- Layout 5 reels, 3 rows, up to 10 paylines
- Feature 10 free spins with an expanding symbol
- Volatility High — long gaps between big wins
How Book of Dead works
Book of Dead has 5 reels and 3 rows with up to 10 paylines. You choose your stake and the number of lines, and wins pay for matching symbols from left to right. The Book symbol is both wild and scatter: it substitutes for other symbols and triggers the feature.
The top-paying symbol is Rich Wilde himself; lower-value card symbols fill most spins.
The free spins and the expanding symbol
Landing three or more Book symbols awards 10 free spins. Before they start, one symbol is chosen at random to become the expanding symbol. During free spins, whenever that symbol lands in enough positions for a win, it expands to cover the whole reel and pays on all lines — even if the positions are not adjacent.
This is what makes the game so volatile: a high-value expanding symbol can produce very large wins, while many free spin rounds return little. Free spins can be re-triggered.
- Trigger 3 or more Book symbols
- Award 10 free spins
- Expanding symbol Chosen at random
- Re-trigger Possible during the feature
RTP versions and maximum win
Play'n GO publishes Book of Dead with an RTP of up to 96.21%, but casinos can choose between several RTP versions. Always check the information screen inside the game at Betsson to see the version on your account. The maximum win is set by the studio as a multiple of your stake and is listed in the paytable.
RTP is a long-term average; with a high-volatility game like this, short sessions can differ enormously from it.

Playing high-volatility slots within limits
High volatility means long losing streaks are normal. Decide your budget and stake before you start, use the deposit limit Swedish rules require, and never increase your stake to chase a bonus round. Free, confidential support is available from Stödlinjen on 020-81 91 00 (stodlinjen.se).
Book of Dead Free Spins & Expanding Symbol
Book of Dead by Play’n GO uses a 5-reel layout with up to 10 paylines. The Book symbol acts as both Wild and Scatter, and landing three or more Scatter symbols triggers 10 Free Spins.
Before the Free Spins round begins, one regular symbol is randomly selected as the special Expanding Symbol. During the feature, this symbol can expand across the full reel when it creates an additional winning combination.
Three or more Book symbols during Free Spins can retrigger the feature and award another 10 spins.
Book of Dead on Mobile
Book of Dead is designed for both desktop and mobile play, with the same core reels, paylines and Free Spins feature available on supported devices.
The mobile version keeps the main controls, symbols and game features within a compact interface, making it possible to access the slot through a supported casino app or mobile browser where available.
